This year’s Met Gala is gearing up to be one for the books. Every year, celebrities show up on the event’s red carpet donning some of the most creative looks they’ll don all year. With people such as Kim Kardashian, Megan Thee Stallion and Pharrell Williams lined up to attend, it is guaranteed to produce memorable fashions. Met Gala queen, Rihanna, may even be in attendance as she teased a Karl Lagerfeld look Sunday in NYC, the night before the actual event.

This year’s theme is “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty.” The theme is based on the new Costume Institute exhibition which explores Lagerfeld’s work. This is also in remembrance of the style icon. He died in 2019 at the age of 85 but spent several years of his life creating clothes for Balmain, Patou, Chloé, Fendi and Chanel, as well as his own label.

What is the Met Gala?

The Met Gala is an annual fundraising event for the benefit of the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute in New York City. The event was formally called the Costume Institute Gala or Costume Institute Benefit. It is one of the most high-profile fashion events in the world, giving public figures the ability to showcase their unique style on the red carpet, yearly. The event has been held annually since 1948, but it wasn’t until 1972 that it began to gain widespread attention across the globe

The event is typically held on the first Monday in May and features a different theme each year. Celebrities and notable figures team up with designers to envision fashion that reflects the night’s theme. The Met Gala is often referred to as the “fashion’s biggest night out.” Rightfully so, as the stars are always out and shining bright!

Here are some of the best looks from over the years.

The list has to be closed by none other than Beyonce in her 2015 sheer, jewel-encrusted, Givenchy Haute Couture gown. This look stirred up quite a controversy as many thought she was showing just a bit too much skin. Of course, the singer embraced the critiques and kept it moving.
