Say ‘No’ to Code Switching

It might be tricky, but for the bossy lady looking to step into her soft girl era it will help to show up as your authentic self, even in professional settings. This means loving who you are and the things that make you who you are, wherever you go. Not allowing yourself to bend to societal pressures of what is professional or “proper” can be difficult. Surrounding yourself with positive people who support you is key.

Let Go of People’s Opinions

Living as your true, authentic self and constantly worrying about what other people think is like oil and water. To enter your soft girl era, it will require you to lean into self-awareness and set your sails for the life that you want to live, regardless of what people think.

Fill Up Your Cup With Things That Bring You Joy

A key to living a soft life is living a life of joy. This means leaning into whimsy and play, aka the things that fill up your cup and make your heart smile. This could mean setting aside time to travel more, to journal daily, to spend time with friends, or to dive back into a childhood activity that you love. Whatever you do, fill your days with things that allow you to indulge in and celebrate life.

Learn to Walk Away

In order to live a “soft life,” it’s essential to metaphorically walk away from the table when love is no longer being served. This might mean walking away from a job, a romantic relationship, or a friendship that no longer serves you. As Black women, it’s been ingrained in us to wear our superhero caps and armor while enduring neglect, abuse, and harm from the people in our lives. This can harden us, but in order to live a soft life, knowing when to walk away from the things and people that no longer serve us is essential.

Lean Into the Present Moment

When your mind is constantly racing from thing to thing, you are not present or grounded. Being able to slow down and savor the little things in life allows you to be fully present and engaged. It also helps you to cultivate a spirit of gratitude.
