Learning how to make a salad takes three simple things: ingredients, time and effort. Here is a no-brainer formula to create the perfect, restaurant quality salad for dinner tonight.

Start with the Base

Raw greens are usually what people think of when they hear the word salad, and that’s because most greens are better eaten fresh. Always add some new, leafy greens like Iceberg or Romaine lettuce as your base. Kale and spinach are also excellent choices. You can always mix and match varied greens for some extra texture and flavor.

Add something crunchy

Next, hit your vegetable and protein intake for the day by adding something crunchy like carrots, sprouts, cucumbers, zucchini, seeds and who can forget croutons. But, make sure to customize your salad toppings according to your taste buds!

Add something soft

Chop up items like roasted sweet potato, avocado and cheese and mix it up into your salad. Or, if you are feeling a little adventurous, add some rice and olives into the mix.

Add something unexpected

This is where you can have fun with it! Add in things like watermelon, hummus, bacon, herbs, and dried fruits to give your salad that extra punch of flavor.

Throw in some protein

The protein brings the full salad together regarding flavor and fullness. I can hardly ever eat one without adding protein because it keeps me full and satisfied. Beans, eggs, tuna, chicken, steak, even tofu and quinoa are all excellent sources of protein and make for a delicious staple in your salad.

Don't forget the dressing

There are plenty of salad dressings that you can make yourself, whether they be mustard based or dairy based. However, a simple homemade olive-oil vinaigrette or a store-bought version of your favorite works just as well.

Here are some excellent salad recipe combos to try today!

Tomato + Zucchini + Mushroom + Onion (great with balsamic or raspberry vinaigrette)
Fresh Peas + Crumbled Cheddar + Onions (great with a sour cream dressing)
