Grapeseed oil is a one-ingredient-wonder. It can be used all over the body, even on your hair.

“Grapeseed oil is a hair hero,” said Susie Geda, a co-founder of Bibo Salon and master hairstylist. “It’s lightweight and non-greasy, giving your hair a weightless feel. Plus, it strengthens your strands, preventing breakage.”

What are the Benefits of Using Grapeseed Oil on Hair?

“Grapeseed oil is enriched with fatty acids, phenolic compounds, and vitamin E,” said Valerie Aparovich, a biochemist and certified cosmetologist-aesthetician. “Fatty acids can nourish and soften the hair, enhancing its hydration levels and ability to seal in moisture.”

Along with its moisture-lock abilities, grapeseed oil is high in linoleic acid. The acid is a key component in the essential omega-6 fatty acids that promote hair growth, according to Aparovich. Grapeseed oil coats the hair in a gleaming shine.

“Although it doesn’t penetrate as deeply as some other oils, it still offers valuable benefits such as moisturizing, nourishing and protecting your hair from environmental damage,” Geda said.

Best Ways to Use Grapeseed Oil for Hair

When it comes to using grapeseed oil for hair, there are two main methods Geda recommends. One way is to apply the oil like you would a leave-in conditioner.

“Start by applying a small amount of oil to the dry or damaged areas of your hair,” Geda said. “You can gradually add more if needed, but it’s best to start with a small quantity to avoid weighing down your hair.”

The other is to use it as an oil treatment. Geda said to “apply a generous amount of oil to the dry or damaged areas of your hair, ensuring thorough coverage.” Then, leave the oil in for about 30 minutes. Once time is up, make sure to shampoo it out before continuing your hair care routine.

What to Know Before Using Grapeseed Oil for Hair?

Although there are several benefits associated with using grapeseed oil, there are people who should proceed with caution.

“If your scalp tends to get oily or greasy, adding more oil can make matters worse,” according to Geda.

She suggests using a very small amount to test it out on your hair. Aparovich noted that there are people that could be allergic to “grape-derived compounds.” She advised to make sure to test the oil on a small part of your skin, or scalp, to make sure you’re not allergic to it.
