Rapper JT (Jatavia Shakara Johnson) of the City Girls is set to release her debut solo rap single this Friday. The 30-year-old rapper is one-half of the widely popular girl rap group. City Girls is made up of JT and longtime collaborator and friend, Yung Miami. The upcoming single from JT is titled “No Bars” and is a track the rapper has been teasing since 2022.

From the teaser, “No Bars” appears to follow suit in the City Girls’ signature of fun, flirtatious rap. In the opening line, JT raps over a bouncy hip-hop beat.

Chasing Different Paths

JT’s imminent solo debut does not mean that the girl group is splitting up. The City Girls have always branched out to pursue individual projects while also maintaining their collaborative efforts. Yung Miami has been featured on projects by herself with artists such as Quavo, Diddy, Gucci Mane and fast-rising New York native rapper Lola Brooke. Miami also hosts a podcast called “Caresha Please” on Revolt TV.

JT has also been featured on projects with other artists including Nicki Minaj who included the rapper on Super Freaky Girl. JT and Yung Miami have also continued collaborating together. This year they released “I Need A Thug” and were both featured in Diddy’s “Act Bad”.

They are also said to be working on their next album, three years after they released their well-received 2020 project, “City On Lock”.

“We’ve been working on new music, and I feel the problem was we were trying to put out the perfect song, but that turned into a project. We got a lot coming. It’s just a perfection thing right now,” JT shared in an interview with Complex magazine.

The rapper says her goal is to avoid putting out anything that fans will consider corny.

“I feel like we’ve been here too long, and I don’t even want to play how we used to,” she said. “I want the music to be good and hit.”
