Beyoncé’s mother Tina Knowles-Lawson has filed for divorce from actor Richard Lawson. The two got married onboard a yacht in 2015 and were together for eight years before this current development.
According to a TMZ report, Knowles-Lawson officially filed for divorce on Wednesday. The publication says it has obtained the pair’s official divorce documents. The report alleges that Knowles lists the date of separation as Tuesday and gave irreconcilable differences as the reason for filing for divorce.
A Disrupted Partnership
Through the years, Knowles-Lawson and Lawson have worked together to run the ever-popular Wearable Art Gala. Last year, the couple celebrated the fifth anniversary of their WACO Theater Center with a gala inspired by the Black excellence of the Harlem Renaissance. The benefit is held to raise funds for the theater’s artistic and youth mentorship programs through a fine art auction.
The couple married later and life and both had two children from their previous marriages. Lawson is father to Bianca and Ricky Lawson from his marriage to Denise Gordy. Knowles-Lawson is mother to Beyoncè and Solange from her marriage to Matthew Knowles.
TMZ report Knowles-Lawson is requesting that the court terminate its ability to award spousal support to her or Lawson. She is is also seeking a name change, a request already evident on her Instagram account. She is asking that her name be restored to Celestine Knowles.
A Long Running Attraction
In 2021, Richard Lawson made an anniversary post on Instagram sharing his feelings towards Knowles-Lawson and explaining the long, winded path that led them to each other. The post featured Tina and Richard holding hands at their wedding.
“I thought you were one of the most beautiful women I had ever met. Breathtaking.!! The thing that was so striking was that your beauty continued to be enhanced by your incredible heart, compassion, empathy, generosity, and philanthropy,” her wrote in the post’s caption.
Lawson continued to share how he felt about her even before they got married.
“You were pregnant with Beyonce at the time, and married, so my incredible attraction for you then could only live in my fantasy. As we remained friends throughout the years, I took great pleasure in observing you become the ultimate mother, especially for your own daughters, but also for the way you care for and nurture women all over the world,” the caption read.
He concluded his caption by sharing that “It took 32 years for my attraction for you to come full circle. It was well worth the wait.”
The couple hasn’t released a statement confirming the news of their split.
