PTO shouldn’t be left solely for vacation days or holidays. Sometimes, your mind and body simply need a break. Hello boss ladies living their best soft life! With trending conversations surrounding the glass cliff, this is especially true for Black women. We are working in environments where we feel unsafe and where we are faced with a myriad of micro-aggressions, stereotypes and mistreatment.

Want to know if it’s time to take PTO? 21Ninety spoke with Ariel Belgrave Harris, an award-winning health and fitness expert who specializes in burnout prevention. If you are considering taking time off to rest and recharge, Harris encourages you to ask yourself these six questions.

Am I feeling exhausted?

If you find yourself running on empty, it’s time to refuel. Take a break, recharge and return with renewed energy.

Have I been neglecting self-care?

If you’ve been putting yourself last and struggling with meeting your basic wellness needs, take PTO as a way to invest in your well-being.

Is my creativity stalling?

Creativity flourishes in a rested mind. If you’ve been hitting a creative roadblock, then a change of scenery during PTO is the perfect catalyst.

Are my relationships suffering?

Whether it’s family, friends or colleagues, your connections matter. Taking time off allows you to nurture and strengthen these bonds.

Am I losing focus?

Burnout can lead to a decline in productivity. If you find it challenging to concentrate, then stepping back will help you regain focus and clarity.

Is my work-life balance off?

Busy work seasons happen, but if work is overshadowing other aspects of your life for an extended period of time, it’s time for a well-deserved break.

If you answered yes to any of the questions, it’s time to put in that PTO request! For more tips on wellness and how to avoid burnout, follow along with Belgrave-Harris’ journey at Gym Hooky where she offers advice to kickstart your health journey.
